Through the past several years of working in the social work field—working diligently on trying to understand human suffering at the most vulnerable level, I have thought of different ways that I could transparently, yet sensitively uncover how I remain steadfast in a mission of delivering hope. Through my own struggles and experience, I have found that a strong faith—along with a firm understanding of self, has been the guidepost of being a safe, resilient, yet compassionate presence to those who are searching.
In a world where there is division amidst a collective yet very individualized quest for meaning, there has been a growing distance between society and the individual. Through tense politics, unspoken post-Covid grief and confusion, and a perceived lack of trust in those who are either in power or steward knowledge, I have discovered that this recipe can often alienate individuals to the point where they are on the brink of complete and utter despair. I write not to pretend I understand everyone’s personal experience, for a complete understanding of another human’s experience is not a role of one person. I write not as an expert in any one matter, nor as an individual who is naïve to the reality of the world’s pain. Instead, I write this out of a deep care for this world—something that I really cannot understand myself. I write this to try and instill a greater hope in individuals, families, and communities – great and small.
